Bob Baffert stands at around 5’7 tall. He might have missed out on a career as an NBA center by a factor of about 14 inches, but he’s actually one of the taller men in the room at many races.

Compared to the jockeys, who measure in at an average 5’2, Bob is a big guy.  The rest of his dimensions aren’t really known. We could speculate wildly on his weight—but he’d probably prefer that we didn’t.

Baffert is driven by pure passion. His philosophy? It’s simple. Set the animals he trains up for success. “This is not about you or me; it’s about a horse making history. It’s sacred. Most people don’t remember the trainer or jockey or owner of Secretariat or Affirmed. I have to look most of them up. This is about the horse,” Baffert has said.

This philosophy has taken him far. Baffert has a record-tying six Kentucky Derby wins, along with many dozens of other professional wins. He’s had a good run, and he knows it.

“Horses have been my life and I owe everything to them and the tremendous sport in which I have been so fortunate to be involved”.

The bad boy of horse racing? It depends who you ask. Friends of Baffert describe the situation in simple terms. “Anybody who walks with that swagger, people are going to love him or hate him…he’s a wiseass and irreverent,” says long-time friend Mike Pegram.

Simple jealousy. Is that all there is to it? Eh. Not quite. Baffert is notorious for having horses disqualified—for drug test failures.

Obviously, doping in professional sports is not a new development. Most people old enough to read this article will remember with clarity the steroid era in professional baseball, or the many controversies surrounding Lance Armstrong.

You don’t usually think about it in the context of horse racing. Is Bob Baffert the Mark McGuire of the Triple Crown? At the time of writing, more than thirty of his horses have failed drug tests.

Most of Baffert’s recorded violations were actually for heightened doses of allowable drugs—like pain medications.

Bob Baffert And The 2021 Kentucky Derby

The height of this controversy came in 2021 when his horse Medinah Spirit finished first in the Kentucky Derby—only to then be disqualified after the post-race drug test.

The drug in question was betamethasone. Basically, an anti-inflammatory. Theoretically, high doses of betamethasone could make it easier for a horse to push through pain and finish strong in a race. It’s completely banned at the Kentucky Derby.

Baffert initially denied the accusation strenuously. “The last thing I want to do is do something that would jeopardize the greatest two minutes in sports,” Baffert claimed.

Baffert was immediately suspended from the Derby. He would call the incident a “Cancel culture kind of thing,” which didn’t exactly endear him to the public.

Eventually, Baffert put out a statement saying that Medinah Spirit had been given an ointment with a small dose of the illegal drug. He maintains that the ointment was used to treat the horse’s skin condition—not improve performance.

Bob Baffert may have run into some controversy in the past, but it never slowed him down. His stable remains full, and with his Kentucky Derby ban lapsed, you can look for his horses in the field this year.

Most notable is Citizen Bull, a horse that won last year’s American Pharoah Stakes.
